Custom 7-String Guitar

·

This custom 7-string guitar is being built by one of my guitar students. He is a lifelong woodworker who owned a custom furniture and cabinet shop for many years. In recent years he has moved to instrument making and has crafted acoustic guitars, electric guitars, mandolin, and a bass.

All of the instruments have been built from preexisting plans ordered online. During one of our weekly lessons he propositioned me about collaborating ona guitar design. He asked for my help to develop a custom guitar from my imagination—combining my guitar knowledge with his woodworking skills.

The result is the prototype custom 7-string guitar pictured here. It’s made of vintage mahogany and flamed maple. More details coming soon as it’s a work in progress.

The seventh string is a B note below the usual low E string. They have been around a long time and were quite common in classical music times. The concept was revisited by jazz guitarist like Lenny Breau, Bucky Pizzarelli, and Ron Eschete…and the father of the modern 7-string jazz guitar was George Van Eps.

The idea has always been to give the guitar a wider (pianistic) range. They also make 8-string guitars with a low F# (or sometimes a high A which is what I would like someday). Now a days they have been heavily adopted by metal guitarists who are drawn to the deep, distortion produced by low frequency strings.
