WhorlWood and the Spirit of the Erie Canal 🎶

Thanks to Museum of Wayne County History for hosting us. And to the Buffalo Maritime Center capturing this moment with WhorlWood. Thanks for allowing us onboard the canal boat of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor.

On Wednesday, October 1, WhorlWood had the incredible honor of performing at Lock 27 on the Erie Canal in Lyons, NY for the arrival of the Seneca Chief — a full-scale replica of the canalboat that first opened the Erie Canal 200 years ago. As the boat glided along the water, it carried more than passengers; it carried two centuries of history, hard work, and hope.

The Erie Canal isn’t just an engineering marvel — it’s a living thread connecting communities across New York State. It built towns, carried dreams, and made it possible for music, stories, and people to travel and meet. Standing on the banks, surrounded by neighbors, families, and friends, we felt that same spirit of connection that must have filled the air in 1825.

Performing as the Seneca Chief arrived felt like stepping into history. Our acoustic set echoed the timeless rhythm of the water and the laughter of the crowd, blending past and present in song.

What struck us most was the sense of community. People came together — not just to watch a boat, but to celebrate what it represents: the ingenuity, resilience, and creativity that flow through the heart of New York. It reminded us that we’re all part of a larger story, one that unfolds every time we gather to share music, art, and history.

We’re deeply grateful to have been part of this celebration. Special thanks to the Buffalo Maritime Center for building the Seneca Chief replica and organizing this historic voyage, and to the Museum of Wayne County History in Lyons, NY for preserving and sharing the stories that make our region so special. Thanks also to local organizers, volunteers, and the Town of Lyons for hosting such a welcoming event.

And of course, thank you to our friends, families, and fans — your support keeps the music alive and inspires us every time we take the stage.

Here’s to another 200 years of connection, creativity, and canal-side celebration!
